Total Hip Replacement

Total Hip Replacement

The hip is one of the largest joints of the human body. The joint is like a joint-and-socket. Total hip replacement is suggested as a treatment for hip pains caused by various other conditions. Arthritis is one of the most common conditions that causes hip pain. Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and traumatic arthritis etc can cause hip pain in people. Other causes include Childhood hip disease, Avascular necrosis and
Post-traumatic arthritis.

Total Replacement Surgery
Total hip replacement is also known as total hip arthroplasty. The surgery is all about replacing the damaged bone and cartilages with a prosthesis.

Are you a candidate for total hip replacement surgery?

The decision to have a total hip replacement should be made in unison with the family, the patient and the doctor. It is only made after the doctor’s suggestion followed by the evaluation/diagnosis. A candidate for total hip replacement surgery is not decided based on the age or sex of the patient. Whether a teenager or an old one, the surgery worked best when done properly. The surgery is recommended:

  • When the patient suffers from severe hip pain that limits the daily activities of the patient.
  • When the patient experience pain even while at rest.
  • When the area of the hip joint becomes stiff and restricts the leg movements.
  • When the medicines and therapies fail to ease the pain.

What are the steps of orthopedic evaluation before surgery?

  • To decide whether to carry out the surgery or not, the doctor will have the following steps of evaluation:
  • Checking the medical history
  • A physical evaluation to assess the strength, alignment and mobility of the hip
  • Other imaging tests such as MRI scan, X-ray etc, to figure out the cause.

How the surgery is done?

The surgery requires a hospital stay. Once after you are taken to the operation theatre, you will be given an anesthesia. It will help you to stay asleep during the surgical process. The prosthesis to be used may show up in different variety of designs and materials. The doctor will choose one that suits the patient well. It takes a few hours for the procedure. First, the doctor will remove the damaged bone and cartilage. Then, the new prosthesis/implant will be placed in the position. The prosthesis will help to restore the normal functioning of the hip.

How about the recovery, results and complications?

After the surgery, you will need to stay in the hospital for a few days. The doctor may suggest for a pain management during the recovery period to ease the pain. Physical therapies and other measures will also be suggested to maintain the overall health. After discharging from the hospital, you will need to spend time for home for a few weeks. You will be able to experience the results right after the surgical pain gets relieved.
Like any other surgery, total hip replacement also carries some risks and complications. Some of the possible complications include infection, dislocation, blood clots, nerve/blood vessel injury, fracture, stiffness, loosening of the implant, leg-length inequality etc.
