What is flat foot or flatfeet?

The condition called flat foot or flat feet is medically known as ‘pes planus’. One is considered as flatfooted when the arch insider his/her feet os flattened. This posture allows the entire foot sole to touch the floor while standing up. Flat foot is a very common condition, which is usually painful. It occurs mainly when the arches don’t develop during childhood. Any injury or wear and tear can also cause a flat foot. Usually, the condition does not require any treatment unless it is painful.

What are the symptoms of flat foot?

People with flat foot does not experience any symptoms associated with the condition. In certain rare cases, there can be foot pain in the arch area or in the heel. There may also be a swelling inside of the ankle.

What causes flat foot?

In infants and toddlers, flat foot is normal as the foot’s arch is yet to develop. The development of this foot’s arch takes place during childhood. Some cases are the result of underdevelopment of the foot’s arch and some may be caused later due to any injury or accident.

What are the tests and diagnosis for flat foot?

The doctor will be able to diagnose a flat foot during the physical examination itself. The doctor may also suggest certain imaging tests if there is a severe pain in the feet:

  • X-rays

  • CT scan

  • MRI

  • Ultrasound

What are the treatment options for flat foot?

Treatments are not necessary if the patient is not experiencing any pain. For painful flat foot condition, the doctor may suggest the following treatment options:

  • Therapy:

  • Use of orthotic devices

  • Proper shoe wear

  • Stretching exercises

  • Surgery:

Flat foot cannot be corrected through a surgery. The surgery is performed with the aim of relieving issues like damage to the tendon or nearby structures.
