What is Perthes disease?

A condition in which the patient experiences a temporary loss of blood supply to the hip is called Perthes disease. As a result of inadequate blood supply, the rounded head of the femur dies. It causes intense inflammation and irritation in the area. The disease process has many stages. This disease is usually seen among children between the age of 4 and 10. it is more common among boys.

What are the symptoms of Perthes disease?

There can be mild pain and limping. These symptoms may be seen intermittently for weeks or months. The child may experience pain in the leg, knee, thigh and groin area. Hip movements usually worsen the pain.

How the disease is diagnosed?

Usually, doctors use x-rays to diagnose the condition. The doctor may suggest x-rays several times during the treatment period.

How is Perthes disease treated?

There are nonsurgical as well as surgical treatments for Perthes disease. Non surgical treatment options include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications

  • Physical therapy

  • Hip abduction

  • Hip rotation

A cast may be applied if the condition really obstructs the range of motion of the hip joint. It prevents progressive deformity due to the disease. Surgical treatment is suggested to re-establish the proper alignment of hip bones. Improving the shape of the hip joint will help to prevent arthritis in the future. Some of the surgical options include:

  • Joint realignment

  • Contracture Release

  • Joint replacement

  • Removal of excess bone or loose bodies
