What is Idiopathic Juvenile Osteoporosis?
It is a rare form of osteoporosis that affects children and adolescents. It is a primary condition with no known cause. It develops in children who is otherwise healthy and about to enter the puberty period. A child may get IJO during 7 to 13 years. Some of the common signs of idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis include:
- Hip pain
- Lower back pain
- Pain in the feet
- Difficulty walking
- Knee and ankle pain
- Fractures in the lower extremities
Idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis may also cause physical malformations like loss of height, sunken chest, lip or kyphosis. In most cases, the condition progresses gradually with age and require no treatment. However, the condition is risky for a child as it is the vital period when bone formation and other growth take place. It may hinder the process and result in low bone mass. Bone fractures in future is the major threat of this condition.
Who are at risk for developing idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis?
Children at the age of 7 to 14 years are more prone to develop idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis. Children younger than the age of 7 may also get idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis. It is said that, boys are at higher risk for developing IJO.
Researchers are still not able to find the exact cause for this condition.
Is the condition can be completely cured?
In some cases, the disease goes away gradually. It may not require any particular treatment. If it does not go away naturally, the doctor may suggest certain treatment options. Treatment will be focusing on the symptoms. Therapies and medications are the commonly suggested treatments. As per National Institute of Health’s suggestions, a dirt rich in calcium and vitamin D and some physical activities will reduce the risk for IJO in children.
