What is primary osteoporosis?
Mainly, there are four major types of osteoporosis:
- Primary osteoporosis
- Secondary osteoporosis
- Idiopathic juvenile osteporosis
- Osteogenesis imperfecta
Among these types, primary osteoporosis is the most common type of osteoporosis. Te condition is more prevalent in women than men. Primary osteoporosis is usually connected to the normal ageing process. At the age of 30, an individual reaches his/her peak bone density. After the age of 30-35, bone loss starts to increase. Developing primary osteoporosis purely depends upon the thickness of bones of an individual. If the individual had a quality life before the age of 30, she or he may be at a decreased risk for developing osteoporosis. In the case of women, an increased bone loss usually starts after menopausal period. It is said that, women are affected earlier than men. Men start to increase bone loss after the age of 40-45. However, most people experience the condition during their 60s and higher.
What is secondary osteoporosis?
The symptoms of primary and secondary osteoporosis are same. Secondary ostroporosis usually occurs as a result of certain medical conditions. Some of the medical conditions that cause secondary osteoporosis include:
- Leukemia
- Hyperthyroidism
- Heperparathyroidism
Secondary osteoporosis can also develop as a result of taking certain medicines. Such medicines cause bone breakdown and other issues. Unlike primary osteoporosis, secondary osteoporosis can develop at any age.
What are the treatments for primary and secondary osteoporosis?
There are medications and home-related therapies and exercises to treat primary as well as secondary osteoporosis. However, the treatment option may cary according to various factors. There are no surgical treatments available for treating primary and secondary osteoporosis. The main aim of the treatment is to increase the bone density and strength.
