What is Shoulder Resurfacing?
The shoulder resurfacing procedure is considered as an alternative to the total shoulder replacement surgery. The procedure does not require cutting and replacing the scapula and humerus. Instead, the humeral head is replaced with an artificial ball and socket. The implant creates a new surface to the bone to remain intact.
Who can be a candidate for Resurfacing Shoulder Replacement?
Shoulder resurfacing is comparatively a conservative procedure. It will be a good option for patients with the following conditions:
- Rotator cuff disease or injury
- Osteoarthritis
- Avascular necrosis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Post trauma arthritis
The doctor may suggest shoulder resurfacing for those who need to alleviate the shoulder pain and increase the joint mobility, but still don’t require a total replacement surgery. Those with mild to moderate arthritis, which is limited to the humeral head can also be a good candidate for shoulder resurfacing surgery.
What are the advantages of having a shoulder resurfacing?
Usually, the procedure is considered as an alternative to the total replacement surgery. Some of the benefits of shoulder resurfacing surgery include:
- No risk of fracture
- Restoration of normal activity
- Less-traumatic
- Quick recovery
- Less pain
How the surgery is performed?
The surgery may require 1 or two days of hospital stay. The patient will be put under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make an incision in the front or the side. The prosthesis type is chosen according to the condition. Through the incision, the damaged head is surfaced with a cap. After the procedure, the surgeon will close the incision with sutures. The surgery may take 1-2 hours of time to complete.
What about the recovery?
The patient may have to stay in the hospital for one or more number of days. The surgeon may suggest limited exercise from the second day itself for faster recovery. The patient may need to wear a sling for around six weeks. Exercises and physical therpies are required to restore the function and motion of the joint.
