Spine pain or Back pain is one of the most common complaint, especially among aged people. However, it affects the young ones too. What are the symptoms of Spine or back pain?

Common symptoms of back pain include the following:

  • Stabbing or shooting pain

  • Limited movement or range of motion of the back

  • Muscle pain

  • Pain that spreads to the legs

  • Inability to stand up straight

What causes back pain?

Back pain can develop due to various reasons. Some of the common conditions that cause back pain include:

  • Osteoporosis

  • Spinal Stenosis

  • Spinal Tumor

  • Osteophytes of the Spine

    • Bone spur
  • Ligament or muscle strain

How is back pain diagnosed?

The doctor will check the medical history and overall health condition of the patient. He/she may suggest to go for some imaging tests to determine the cause of back pain. X-rays are usually suggested to find whether there is any rupture or bulging on the disk. Other tests include:

  • Bone scan

  • MRI

  • CT

  • Nerve studies such as EMG or Electromyography

What are the treatments for back pain?

Mild cases of back pain usually does not require much treatments rather than rest. A short period bed rest will help the patient to give relaxation from pain. If the cases is moderate and has shooting pain, the doctor will suggest for certain pain relievers. There are certain low-dose antidepressants which are used to treat chronic back pain. Other modes of treatments include:

  • Physical therapy

  • Exercise

  • Injections and

  • Surgery
