What is Femoroacetabular impingement or FAI?
FAI is a condition in which, the hip bones are shaped abnormally. It happens because, they do not fit together perfectly. As a result, the hip bones rub against each other and results in hip joint damage. Bone overgrowth is the main cause for the clash between hip bones. There are different types of FAI:
- Pincer
- Cam
- Combined
What causes Femoacetabular Impingement?
The main cause of this condition is that, the hip bones do not form normally during the growing years. FAI can be considered as a deformity of a bone spur or pincer bone spur or both.
What are the symptoms of FAI?
Pain in the groin area is the major symptom of FAI. When the condition progresses, pain may spread towards the outside of the hip. It may also cause sharp, stabbing pain while turning and twisting the hip.
What are the home remedies for FAI?
Home remedies will be helpful during the first stages of the condition. Taking rest for some days and haing anti-inflammatory medicines will help the patient to reloieve pain. However, if the symptoms persist, the patient may need to seek medical care.
How is FAI diagnosed?
The doctor will first examine the symptoms as well as the hip. If the doctor suspects the patient to have FAI, he/she may suggest any of the following tests:
- Impingement test
- X-rays
- CT scans
- MRI
What are the treatment options for FAI?
The doctor may suggest nonsurgical or surgical treatment options, based on the severity of the conditions. Nonsurgical treatment options include:
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical therapy
- Activity changes
Surgical treatment: If FAI has damaged the joint or the symptoms are not relieved by the nonsurgical treatments, the doctor may suggest a surgery. In most cases, the doctor chooses arthroscopy. Through an arthroscope, the doctor analyses the dmage inside thenjoint and repairs or removes the damaged part, if required.
Surgery is good to reduce the symptoms. It will give long-term results rather than the nonsurgical treatments. Correcting the impngement will also help to prevent future damages to the hip joint.
