What is osteoporosis?

Simply put, ostoporosis is an orthopedic condition that affects the bones. The condition makes the bones weak and brittle. As a result, mild stresses and fall makes the bone to break. Fractures related osteoporosis usually occur in the wrist, spine and hip. Ageing, low body weight, certain medications, smoking, menopause, being a female etc, are some of the common risk factors for osteoporosis.

What are the causes of osteoporosis?

A low bone density or bone strength is the major cause for osteoporosis. The bones get thinner with age. Certain risk factors of osteoporosis causes severe bone thinning in people. Bone mass attained in the youth decided how the person is likely to develop osteoporosis. If the level is very low, the person may get osteoporosis very easily.

What are the symptoms of osteoporosis?

In the early stages of this condition, the patient may not experience many symptoms. Once the bones are really weakened, the patient will start showing symptoms and signs such as:

The test is painless and has no side effects. In most cases, the doctor checks for the major bones like the hip, wrist and the spine.

How is osteoporosis treated?

Medications, home-related therapies etc, are usually used to treat osteoporosis. Bisphonates are the commonly prescribed medications for both male and female ostoporosis patients. The main aim of the treatment is to improve the bone density or thickness of the bone. Medications will also be prescribed to reduce the related symptoms and discomforts. The doctor may also recommended some simple exercise that may strengthen the bones.
