What is ICSI IVF?

ICSI known as Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection, this is specialised form of IVF, which is used for the treatment of severe cases of male factor infertility. An injection of a single sperm directly into a mature egg involves ICSI.

When is ICSI IVF used?

Around 30-40% of all infertility issues revolve around the significant male factor. With the new technique of ICSI, that has revolutionised the treatment for male infertility. Individuals that may be helped by ICSI which include couples who have had poor or no fertilization during standard IVF, considering men who have:

• A low sperm count
• Obstructing the sperm release, such as vasectomy.
• Poor sperm motility (slow moving sperm)
• Antisperm antibodies (antibodies produced by the man’s body that may inhibit sperm function)
• Poor sperm morphology (abnormally shaped sperm)
• A reversal of vasectomy procedure that was unsuccessful or resulted in low sperm count or poor quality of sperm

 

FERTILISATION WITH IVF ICSI? What is the advantage?

There are many IVF programs which are around the world do have experience with ICSI. At our fertility centre an average of 70 -80% of the mature eggs will fertilise normally. In the process, some eggs may be damaged by the injection process(up to 2%), whereas others may fertilise abnormally.

There are more than 90% of couples undergoing ICSI will have at least one embryo to replace. There is a very small chance even ICSI that none of the eggs will fertilise. It is proven that clinical pregnancy rates are similar to that those of standard IVF and vary with the age of the women.
