OVERVIEW
An other word for miscarriage is known as loss of pregnancy, before the gestation period which is about 20 weeks. It is known that 20% of the pregnancies end up in miscarriage and most often within the first 12 weeks. Recurrent miscarriage or habitual pregnancy loss is defined as three or more consecutive pregnancy loss
There is no defined cause for miscarriage, however there could be some possible causes are:
- Genetic defect
- Abnormally shaped uterus
- Uterine fibroids
- Scar tissue
- Hormonal imbalances
- Illness like diabetes
- Age
- Habits like smoking, alcohol, caffeine and certain medications that women take the can hinder pregnancy
The physician does a number of tests in addition to reviewing your medical history and conducting a pelvic exam to diagnose the possible cause of recurring miscarriages.
The tests include:
- Hysterosalpingogram
- Mapping your chromosomes
- Abnormal hormone level Vaginal ultrasound
- Endometrial biopsy
Once the physician has diagnosed the cause they will work with you to map a treatment plan that will help to correct the problem. Which may also include surgery to maintain the shape of the uterus or medication to correct immune problems & hormone imbalances. There are chances, which can help the treatment of becoming pregnant to a full term, however if the cause is ruled out and there is no significant treatment given there is a slim chance of getting pregnant.
