Intrauterine insemination (IUI) - get started

The first thing that you need to do while getting started, is to call your GP, who will take a look at your medical history, give you a physical examination and then recommend some tests or lifestyle changes. Your doctor can also recommend you to a fertility specialist.

What is IUI?

This procedure involves laboratory procedure, which separates the fast moving sperm from a more sluggish or non-moving sperm. The fast moving sperm is then placed into the woman womb close to the time of the woman ovulation and the egg is released from the ovary in the middle of the monthly cycle.

Is IUI for me?

The clinic that you go would recommend IUI accordingly to the following:

  • Unexplained infertility
  • Ovulation problems
  • Male partner experiences impotence or premature ejaculation problems
  • Unknown fertility issues, but do not have a male partner and is trying for a baby by donor sperm

 

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) - the risks

  • IUI is a straight forward procedure,painless, although there may be some mild cramps similar to period pains.
  • Drugs used during fertility& reaction to the drugs and certain pregnancy problems.
  • With stimulated IUI, risk of multiple pregnancy
  • Risk of abandonment , if more than tow mature egg follicles are present, after doing an ultrasound/scanning before ovulation

You would need to discuss potential risks before you start the treatment.
