Ayurveda suggests that the involvement of the various doshas-vatta, pitta, kaffa-any one of them or all the 3 together is likely to lead to sterility or infertility. The causes of female infertility include obstruction in the Fallopian tube, failure to ovulate or any infection in the uterus.
The most common causes for male infertility are low sperm count, poor quality of sperm or total absence. Infertility in males and females are treated separately.
In men, these include environmental and hormonal factors that affect the production of healthy, motile sperm and normal semen, as well as blockages that affect delivery of sperm.
In women, the variables are varied as she plays a greater role in reproduction. First, one of the organs involved in reproduction may be absent, malformed or non-functional. Second, the organs may be normal, but the complex feedback system that is necessary to support follicular development, ovulation and implantation of the fertilized egg may be disrupted.

- Insufficentquantity of sperm count
- Less mobility of sperms
- Semen comes out from the vagina after intercourse
- Semen with pus cells and blood cells
- Irregular liquefaction time for semen
- Impotency
- Untimely ejaculation
- Vericocele
So as to diagnose fertility related problem in women, the first step in testing to find out if she is ovulating each month. Doctors can also check if a woman is ovulating by doing Blood tests and ovulating by doing Blood Tests and an Ultrasound of the ovaries.
In Ayurveda, infertility is called VANDHYATWA. As per the Ayurvedic texts, the most probable causes of sterility or infertility are: Constituents of Garbha (Zygote/embryo/fetus); Rutu (Season/fertile period), Kshtra (Healthy Yoni, uterus and Passage, reproductive organs), Ambu (proper nutrient fluid, clarity of Hrudaya or psychology, properly functioning Vayu (normal Nervous System) and Sadbhavas(Mother, Father, Atma, Satwa, Satmya and Rasa). Abnormality in any one these cause infertility.
Sexual intercourse with a woman who is very young , old; constantly ill, hungry and afflicted with other psychological abnormalities or
in humpback or later posture is futile; semen falling over Sameera Nadi or in outer part of Yoni also fails to impregnate the woman.
Main causes of Infertility in Women are:
- Fallopian tube blockages
- Earlier abortions
- Irregular menstruation, less or heavy bleeding during menstruation,
- Infections affecting Vagina, Vagina canalr, or entrance of the uterus
- Infection on cervix area
- Hyperacidity if Vaginal region, which can kill sperms before entering in Uterus cavity.
