Ulcerative colitis is a long lasting disease occurring in any part of the large intestine and rectum. This disease usually affects people 15 to 30 years. In the initial stages signs of inflammation can be seen at the rectum and then slowly it spreads to other segments of the colon. The seriousness of the diseases is different from person to person. Ulcerative colitis does not affect the esophagus, stomach or small intestine. Ulcerative colitis can be inherited. About 20% of people with inflammatory bowel disease have a first relative (mother, father, brother, sister) with the disease.
Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis
- Blood in diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Painful, urgent bowel movements
Several diagnostic procedures are used to distinguish ulcerative colitis from other conditions. One or more of the following tests may be required.

- Stool tests
Ayurveda offers two types of treatments for curing ulcerative colitis, vasti therapy (enemata) and oral medications. As a normal procedure, vasti therapy is administered first followed by several months of oral medications. Panchakarma therapy is also recommended for ulcerative colitis.
Specific food items are generally advised for patients of ulcerative colitis. However, these food guidelines may not be applicable to all patients. An ayurvedic doctor can provide an individualized nutritional plan.
Barley, saffron, mung dal, urad dal, coriander, cumin, fennel, green lentils, navy beans, kidney beans, almonds, pomegranate, banana, mango, limes and kiwi fruit.
Foods to be Avoided
Avoid dairy products like milk, ice cream, cheese and chocolate etc. During the active phase of the disease, the patient must avoid bran, porridge, green salad, leafy vegetables, mango, orange and lemon. It’s always better to avoid restaurant food and fast food.
