An overview on Kyphoplasty
Occurrence of fracture to spine and related parts has increased considerable due to very fast moving nature of the modern world. It is estimated that about 700,000 bone fractures are occurring every year. It is estimated that out 100,000 persons in the age group of 50-55 about 500 persons are likely to encounter spine fractures. This rate increases to 1290 when the age group is changed to 85 and above.
Kyphoplasty is a surgical procedure which is intended reduce the pain caused by spine fracture and to restore the lost height of vertebrae due to fracture and other connected matters.
Surgery
In this procedure the surgeon inserts a narrow tube to the vein of the patient through a small incision made in the back of the patient. Using fluoroscopy the surgeon guides the tube through your vein till it reached the vertebrae which need surgical correction. With the help of X-ray images the surgeon now introduces a balloon to the vertebra through the tube. After ascertaining that it has reached the correct position by viewing its image, the surgeon now carefully inflates the balloon. As the balloon inflates it presses the vertebra pieces to its natural position. It also pressed the soft inner bone to create a cavity in wall of the vertebra. The surgeon now removes the balloon. Now with the help of the tube the surgeon injects polymethylmethacrylate which acts like a cement and fills in the cavity caused by the balloon. The injected material hardens quickly and stabilizes and acts like as bone itself. In effect the vertebral pieces are brought to their original places and the gap in between the pieces is bridged with cement which on solidification acts as if it was bone itself.
After the procedure
This procedure takes only one hour for completing all the actions connected with a vertebra. Following the procedure the patients will be observed closely in observation room. Patients will be required stay overnight in the hospital. They are not expected to drive any vehicles while they return home. Pain will be relieved immediately after the surgery or within one or two days from the day of the surgery. Strenuous activities like lifting of weight etc should be avoided for at least six weeks.
Risks
Some probable risk factors like bleeding, infection, reaction to anesthesia etc with any surgery is applicable to this surgery also. Other risks include injury to spinal cord and nerve which may occur due to mal positioning or misuse of the instruments used for surgery. The allergic reactions that may occur to the solution used as dye is also another possible risk factor with this procedure.
